A 5000 word essay exploring what influenced Zelia Raye to create Modern Theatre Dance? What were the political and social contexts of the time and how was the genre developed?

Zelia Raye was the founder of ‘Modern Theatre Dance’ for the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD.) Raye was well travelled and her visits to various countries, as well as the need for well trained British dancers influenced her to create the new genre. The end of World War One saw a move towards less repressed social dances and an increasing independence for women. However, in the main dance societies in Britain, Ballroom and Ballet were still the leading genres in dance. Therefore, Raye can be heralded as a pioneer for stage dance in Britain, leading to the development of a high standard of the genre and assisting qualified members in obtaining professional positions.
