We know there is some form of light outside, as Hamm asks to be wheeled to the window to feel the light on his face. It is also revealed that they must be near water as the sand for the ash-bins is collected from the shore. There is a feeling of limbo to the whole play; it is cyclical, with phrases being repeated and it ending as it begun. One senses that they are stuck, they can not go back to what was but until they bare witness to themselves they can not move forward.
